16:40 Guest Speaker: How to Recruit Your Future Inclusive STEM Workforce: One Child at a Time

Executive Director of The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) Dr. Karl Reid, shares how NSBE is creating new opportunities for black youth in America by preparing them for careers in engineering. The key is making sure these students are proficient in math during milestone years while helping them see themselves as engineers of the future. This ability to get a glimpse of one’s “probable future” builds their self-efficacy and greatly impacts the futures of African American students. Hear how NSBE, one of the largest student-governed associations based in the US, is preparing the future of black engineers through fun, educational experiential programs led by NSBE’s engineering students, educators, seasoned technical professionals and partners from some of our nation’s leading school districts and corporations.
During this talk, Dr. Reid will share:
• Research that proves self-efficacy is a critical component to persistence in STEM fields
• How NSBE’s programs have increased participants’ science, math and vocabulary skills
• How early childhood experiences shaped his engineering aspirations
• How strategic partners have leveraged the program as a part of their STEM pipeline future workforce initiatives
